US Census Opens Office in Detroit

01/01/70

The effort to effectively count every American is starting. The US Census Bureau opened an office on Detroit’s Westside to the sounds of West African drumming. The office on Grand River near Greenfield will be one of five Detroit offices, 12 in the metro area. Dwight Dean is Regional Director for the Census. He says about 1,000 people are being hired part-time to drive every street, avenue and road to make sure their address list is correct. “And this is probably the final step in a decade of work and building processes to get that address file as accurate and complete as you can get it.” Next year, the census surveys will be sent to homes nationwide. Dean says the national return rate is about 67%, but Michigan is usually higher than average at about 72%. For those who don’t return the seven question survey, the census takers will start knocking on doors just about a year from now.
